IPM acted as Project Managers for the decommissioning and remediation of a former gas works

IPM were appointed to manage the decommissioning of redundant gas holders on the site of a former gas works in 2020.

Following the demolition of gas holders, IPM successfully managed the remediation and disposal of stockpiled contaminated land.

In November 2020, approximately 57 tonnes (80m³) of potentially contaminated soil was excavated and stored in skips for further assessment. Each skip was sampled and tested three times over a three-year period. Results in 2023 confirmed that the soil had high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), lead, and sulphate, making it unsuitable for disposal at La Collette Waste Reclamation Landfill without remediation.

IPM investigated options for material re-use on an adjacent site, however this was deemed unviable due to excessive contamination and time restrictions.

A bioremediation strategy was developed in collaboration with a Geotechnical Specialist, and remediation began in December 2023. Treated materials were subsequently accepted at the La Collette landfill cell facility, while four skips of soil were transported off-island for disposal at a certified facility.
